Moonshine: A Cafe Designed in the Style of Brutalism

Unveiling the Authenticity of Raw Concrete

Through insight and observation, Muuk Design Associates has discovered that with the rapid changes of urban commercial activities, decorative and renovative materials have also witnessed new additions, layering, and changes. Following the design principle of simplicity, Muuk has decided to exclude superfluous decorations to reveal the authenticity of the material itself, allowing the commercial space to subtly blend in the bustling city scene.

As a cafe designed in the style of Brutalism, Moonshine stands out with its unique approach to materials. Muuk Design Associates, led by Mok Liu and Ingyu Ko, have eliminated all unnecessary ornamentation and incorporated various techniques into the work. The raw concrete, hammered surface, patterns created with a cement spatula, and even the rounded corners come together to convey the supreme architectural craftsmanship of Brutalism.

The spatial arrangements within Moonshine allow for seamless bodily movements and vision throughout the space. From the semi-outdoor seating to the bean roasting area at the end, the design invites people on the streets to catch a glimpse of and engage with the factory space, which is the heart of the cafe. Muuk has deliberately carved out spaces for interaction, such as areas with different seating heights and an extended communal bar top and bench.

One of the design challenges faced by Muuk was creating lines and patterns on the facade of the bar. To overcome this, they adjusted the process and used precast molds to create the pattern, which was then attached to the furniture piece. This innovative solution allowed them to achieve their desired aesthetic while maintaining the integrity of the design.

The project, located in Taipei, Taiwan, was completed in June 2020. Moonshine has since become a standout destination for coffee lovers and design enthusiasts alike. Its unique blend of raw materials, rustic charm, and Brutalist design principles create an atmosphere that is both inviting and visually striking.

Moonshine's exceptional design has been recognized with the Bronze A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design category in 2022. This prestigious accolade is bestowed upon outstanding and creatively ingenious designs that authenticate experience and resourcefulness. Muuk Design Associates' work exhibits strong technical and creative skills, contributing to quality of life improvements and making the world a better place.
